Backlinks and SEO.
Hi guys I’m a bit confused on this. First of all I would like to know that are sites penalized or does it have any ill effects on a particular site if the backlinks are from a low PR site?? There are many who say it does. So if it happens this way it could have some big implications for things like forum sig’s, which automatically appear on lots and lots of low PR pages. Or maybe they can tell which ones are sig’s and which aren't (may be its possible). I can also see why this would be a problem, because spammy links would appear on a large number of low PR pages.
Your comments are appreciated and thanks in advance.

As far as possible you should avoid spammy links otherwise your site may get penalized. Also it is frequently recommended to give more priority on relevancy and high PR of a site during link building process. IMO, if a site has PR as on date, say for example PR# 4 and it relevant to your site you can even build link with them, their PR can be improved overtime since PR is fluctuating.

Too many incoming links from low PR and spammy sites would definitely have a negative impact on your site's PR too. I suppose the same rule would apply to the backlinks from forum signatures too.

Hello Callum,
Yes the effects of the backlinks are mysterious.
You yourself raised a question and you have answer to your question too. That's great. I do agree with the posts above. You need to keep a regular check on it, from whom you are getting the backlinks is a very important factor in SEO.

Well Callum your question has made me think about it, though I’m not sure with the signature issue so I would probably not comment on it but yea you will definitely get the answer here by someone more experienced in this thing.
Regarding the penalty from backlinks of low PR sites, yes you will have a certain amount of drawback if there are too many links from those sites linking to your site. The IBL's should be high in relevancy and quality.

Re:
According to me back-links are links that you've created that are directed towards your website. The number and quality of back-links that your site has is a clear indication of the popularity or importance of that particular site. Backlinks are essential as far search engine optimization is concerned for the very reason that search engines, such as Google, will often give more credit to a site that have a good number of quality back-links, and consider those sites as more relevant within their search result.

Well, you won't get penalized unless you are connected with a bad neighborhood. The backlinks should be built only from relevant, high PR and high authority sites. I really don't think that a forum signature can create any issue unless the forum is not relevant to your niche or is a bad neighborhood.

You cant be penalized from google because everyone would crash their competitors. Worst punishment you can get is your spammy links to be deindexed.

It is right that if you spam in any forum, your account will get banned. It is essential to post suitable and authoritative content and follow the guidelines given by the webmaster when it comes to forum postings.
