Default Use of no follow tag

Using the no follow tag is good or not? When search engines see the no follow tag they do not give any credit to those links in their algorithms.
How successful has been the use of No Follow attribute for content spamming?

The "nofollow" attribute which is associated with links was originated by Google for preventing content spam.

But this haven’t solved problem yet as still many spammer hope human beings will see the links and will click through resulting in conversion....

Google proposes to deny any benefit accumulating from a hyperlink that contains no follow attribute. But the use of No Follow attribute hasn't been able to stop content spamming completely, although it has managed to reduce it considerably. This could be due to content spammers using automated programs to allocate thousands of comments at one go which are targeted at a vast multitude of blogs.

Apart from the no follow attribute, webmasters also use other techniques such as creating captchas, requiring comment makers to register, pre-moderation of comments etc to stop content spamming.

No Follow tag was first developed for bloggers as in the comment section they were receiving lots of pharmaceutical, stock market etc. ads. And to use against spammers it’s a great tool. As your concern about good or bad, yes it can be used in a bad way. For example, if you are doing reciprocal link trade, which is not only useful for traffic but also for PageRanking, then there are chances of using no follow tag on other’s webpages for your links, just to keep you away from the benefits. You can keep track of by searching the source code on the link page. So in a nut shell you can use it for both ways good or bad, choice is yours.

The NoFollow attribute indicates the search engines that the outgoing link does not have approval for having appearance in the webpage. Although the no follow attribute hasn't been able to stop content spamming completely, it has managed to reduce it to some extent.
