Most small businesses get stuck with their online marketing promotion in some areas like :

* SEO – They understand the concept of search engine optimization, and do some work there, but they usually give up before great results are achieved.
* PPC – People get a Google AdWords account, invest some money, watch it disappear, and stop.
* Social Media – Here, people just waste time because they don’t know how to do it right.

*- To get started, you need to think outside the box.Think different which will defiantly make you the stand out from the crowd.

*- Once you find an area where it makes sense to advertise, contact the publisher or vendor and set up a test.

*- When you run your test, be sure to split-test. If you’re running a dedicated e-mail, for example, you’ll want to test a couple different subject lines against each other. On your next test, choose the subject line that performed best and then test something in the body of the e-mail.

*- The key is to go where the customers are.

*- Sponsoring newsletters or dedicated solo e-mails is an extremely effective method of advertising for many businesses.

As far as tracking advertising that depends what you do. For one of my sites I have a quick survey that people can take that asks how they found our site. That has been very helpful in finding out what works.

Surveys are a good idea. There are a number of ways to keep track of your visitors and where they saw the advertising that brought them to you.

Great ideas. I was thinking of banners. I will also give a try to the survey now.. never tried those. Will banners be effective or surveys?

I think banners are useful.. but don't post them anywhere. prefer relevant ads.

Surveys won't bring you traffic rather will let you know from where they have dropped in to your website whereas Banners, effective attractive banner may bring in good traffic !!
If you just want traffic then try to have your banner at high traffic websites.

Delivering ads to Internet users via Web sites, e-mail, ad-supported software, text messaging and Internet-enabled cellphones. Also called an ad network. Internet advertising organizations act as a middleman between the advertiser and the Internet venues that display the ads. They sell the online campaign to the advertisers and then deliver the ads to the sites that display them. The site owners receive a royalty based on the number of times users click the ads.
