Alexa Rankings are not extremely accurate, however, most of the sites in the top 100,000 are generally popular and high traffic websites. Sometimes sites with a high Alexa rankings actually get a considerable amount of traffic. But they are not to be relied on too much as the ranking can be manipulated by installing the Alexa toolbar on your browser and visiting your site daily.

If Alexa ranking is not a trustworthy then what is it that will help you out for objectively assessing your position. To keep track of your business progress, reportable measure should be used. I know there are some paid services, but for a newbie it’s surely not the way. Do you think there is any other option for Alexa ranking, which will be trustworthy enough?

In my opinion Alexa is not that useful but it does at least allow you to compare traffic to other sites in the same niche. You cannot completely rely on Alexa rankings though simply because you can install the toolbar which would artificially inflate your own figures if you repeatedly visit your own site, for eg. having it set as your homepage. That's how some people get their sites so high with so little traffic.
The Alexa toolbar isn't currently available for FireFox but there is an extension called SearchStatus available that will pull both the Google PR and the Alexa rank for every domain that you visit. I presume that Alexa counts a request for a domain as a vote for it so this may also skew the results. |
