Too many errors in the source code will cause the search engine robots problems when trying to index your web pages.

Yes, if you have too many 404 errors then it may hurt your ranking. Clean your error pages always or redirect your error pages to a meaningful page.

404 pages "Page not found" is the error page displayed whenever someone asks for a page that’s simply not available on your site.
If the SE spiders encounter too many 404 error pages, they may stop indexing your pages and frequency of their visits to your site may get reduced.
