Default Cross Linking

If I have a bunch of very related websites on the same server/same IP, can I cross link them without any problems? Will the sites get penalized by the Search Engines?

Cross Linking is often done for the purpose of increasing a sites' popularity within the search engines. Make sure you avoid excessive cross linking as it may get penalized by the search engines in the form of site drop down in search results and your site may even disappear from the search engine results.
