Comments are helpful for a blog, they can motivate the author for writing more articles
if an article gets more number of quality comments it would be attracted by visitors and they may bookmark your site.
There is no such hard and fast rule to tackle spam posting.

IMO it is a way to build community by commenting on the blogs.
More number of quality comments increases the popularity of the article.
It is a way to express your feelings, thoughts and insights about a particular topic to motivate others. Comments also act as a source to improve blog articles.
Moderation is the best followed practice to stop comment spamming.

Yes, the blog is interactive in nature, so comments are important to keep it growing and alive unless you want to keep it personal.

I'd go with moderation for the comments.

Comments on blogs are about building a community. Readers posting comments on blogs contrubute to the blog and enhance interactivity.

One can hold up comments in moderation on his blog to tackle spam comments and approve only the genuine comments which would be visible to all readers.

try using wordpress if you have a blog. it allows you to moderate comments, you can delete posts that are unnecessary (specially spam) you have the option not to approve comments you feel is hurtful to you or to the public in general.. so on and so forth.

i believe a comment option for blogs just initiates interaction with your visitors. here you are writing your thoughts to the world, then why not get a response to it too from your readers?

You need those comments to see do people love your postings.
On my blog it was very helpfull, and it's nice when you see a lot of those messages.

Commenting on blogs is a good way to get response and interaction with your readers. You can even make it a point wherein you actually try to listen to your readers and post articles connected to their requests. Comments will also inspire you in one way or another knowing that your opinions are heard.

The comments on blogs are not biased so it is very good to get the responses from there as the writer of a particular article knows exactly what the readers think about his/her article. The fine thing about the comments on blogs is that if your comment is good and is liked by other readers they will probably hit your link and your site will get traffic from that.

As far as spamming is concerned the comments should be moderated before being put up and also if the mod’s know that a particular commenter is regular they can give a free pass to their comments which doesn’t need to be moderated each and every time.

The links provided at many blogs are tagged as “nofollow” so they are not crawled by the SE’s but it can get you good traffic just like forum postings where if the reader likes a particular post they’ll hit for the link.

For example I found a reputed educational site ( which I don't nameout here ) that has three casinos, two for poker, and one bingo links on its front page, so it’s very difficult for any search engines to know which links can be trusted, at such situation I believe the SE will just not count the bad links.

Comments are very important for any blog. If you receive good comments from the users, it is their appreciation and understanding and these is very important in terms of enhancing the popularity of the blog. The blog becomes much more meaningful and interactive with the comments.
