Directory submission is an important step towards link popularity building. Also many search engines use human edited directories like DMOZ in order to determine the value of the websites they index.

I would suggest to go for manual directory submission and get listed in relevant categories only.

As mentioned earlier, if nothing else you should submit to DMOZ in the correct category.

It's also worth looking for local directories (if it's a local business) or seeing of there are specialist directories for your particular subject.

Yep, directory submission is very helpful. When you submit your site in directories it helps in getting more backlinks. Bcoz of this search engines automatically find & list your site. Also when your backlinks are more then it helps in getting high PR.

Matt Cutts said in his video blog - that "Google is likely to pay more attention to the rate at which a site aquires new links rather than the overall number of links", hence getting new links is more important rather than getting overall number of links in bulk.

That's interesting. I guess they are looking for sites which are consistently popular rather than those that have a sudden peak. It's a kind-of anti-spamming measure as well.

All the search engines are struggling with relevancy at the moment and the problem has lead some commentators to wonder whether search engines are ultimately doomed to failure.
