Default Bandwidth calculation

I would like to calculate the exact bandwidth required for my website. According to my knowledge, bandwidth is the measure of the data transferred from one point to another point. It can be defined by the size of your website and also the number of hits coning to your website. Is there any other way to calculate the exact bandwidth required for the website.

Right, hence it's very difficult to predict the exact amount of bandwidth required for any website since you can not have the correct number of hits for your website. Bandwidth consumption also depends on media files(images, audio/video, animation files) which do require huge resources.

You may find few tools available on internet which can calculate bandwidth but you can't trust them for their accuracy

Its very difficult to calculate the exact bandwidth requirement for a website, unless it is hosted and have a control panel to manage it. If you website is currently hosted on a cPanel hosting package. Using cPanel control panel's "Bandwidth" option, one can check the bandwidth usage for the site and determine the bandwidth required.

There is no chance you can figure out the bandwidth usage for your website before you host it. You can check the bandwidth stats once your site is hosted and then keep upgrading bandwidth for your website as required.

The easiest way to calculate the bandwidth usage of the website is to host it and check the usage of bandwidth in the control panel offered with the hosting plan. If this is not an option for you then you can only predict the bandwidth usage and you will never be able to determine the true bandwidth usage of the website.

I agree. Initially you can host your website on a shared hosting plan and find out the bandwidth used by the website; if you find that the resources provided in that plan are not sufficient and the speed of your website is reducing; you might upgrade the plan to VPS hosting or dedicated hosting.

Sometimes my website is overloaded with heavy traffic and thereby it becomes slow, that is the reason I wanted to calculate the exact bandwidth required. I have read about the VPS hosting platform. It seems appropriate for my website. I would like to have complete details on the VPS hosting plans that you provide.

Using your control paneal you can certainly refer the bandwidth usage for your website hence you can decide the hosting package which will suit your hosting needs.
Higher hosting package like a VSP would be an better option if you have a huge traffic to your website.

**important** - this is only a rough concept

For a rough way to estimate bandwidth for a website I like to use the following calculation:

((Estimated Monthly Page Views X Average Page Size) + Downloads) x Fudge Factor = Estimated Monthly Bandwidth

***VERY IMPORTANT NOTE*** all the units must be the same standard, I would suggest KB. At the end remember to change the units into something workable (so either GB or MB) a quick summary of conversion is as follows:

1MB = 1024KB
1GB = 1024MB

A brief explanation of each item in the calculation is a follows:

Estimated Monthly Page Views - How many pages are opened in a monthly period (total across the entire site).

Average Page Size - exactly as it says is the average page size of viewable pages.

Downloads - This is optional really and only applies if you have downloadable content so you estimate how many downloads and what size they will be on average.

Fudge Factor - This is always >1, this is your safety margin so you don't exceed bandwidth. I would always suggest 1.2 (20%) to 1.5 (50%).

I hope this is useful to some

Thanks for sharing your innovation
Well, i didn't get what you mean by Fudge Factor. Just wanted to know the reason for selecting Fudge Factor value between 1.2 to 1.5 only when accordingly to your formula it is greater the 1 so it can be anything like 1.1, 2.4, 6.3....or 7.9 etc...

The reason the fudge factor is there is that it is a buffer for the unexpected. So the reason for selecting one between 1.2 and 1.5 is to take that into account. For example 1.2 is there to indicate a possible 20% increase over what you have already estimated (because chances are the estimates won't be 100% accurate hence them being estimates). By all means you could increase that number to whatever you want but if you increase it by 1.0 bear in mind that thats an increase of 100%.

In an example:

((57 x 1200Kb) x 10000Kb) + 1.5 "150%" =117600Kb/month

((57 x 1200Kb) x 10000Kb) + 2.5 "250%" =196000Kb/month

So in summary of Fudge Factor this is the margin of error.

Default " Ed's Bandwidth Calculator "

Perfect, thanks for clarification.
Certainly we can rely on the results by using your formula. I will address it as an " Ed's Bandwidth Calculator"

Also, I will forward this thread to everyone who want to know/predict their approximate bandwidth usage for a month.
