Default Web hosting for an open source website

I am planning to launch an open source website but I am not too sure about the hosting plan I can use. Can anyone please guide me with this? I would also like to know which one is the most reliable web hosting platform? Windows hosting or Linux hosting?

Hi Carol,

The selection of the hosting platform will depend on the open source software that you are going to use. If the open source software is a cross platform, you can select either Linux or Windows.
Selection between Windows or Linux will mainly depend on the applications used to built your own website. If you have a website built in asp, asp.net or MS-SQL or you are willing to use any Microsoft application like ColdFusion or any other, you will have to opt for a Windows based hosting plan. If you have a website built in PHP or HTML, than you can opt for a Linux based hosting plan.

If you plan to use open source application/platform for your website then you can go with either of the hosting platfrom. Both Windows and Linux are reliable hosting platforms.

Thanks for this information, this will be an eCommerce website, therefore I am also planning to use a CMS, which one you think would be preferable?

Joomla and Drupal are mostly preferred by users. You can check the list of CMS we offer. If you need any other CMS apart from this list, please let us know the name and system requirements of that CMS, we will check the same and suggest you a solution accordingly.

Depending on the platform that you select you can opt for the CMS. CMS that use PHP can be used on Windows as well as Linux hosting but a few like DotNetNuke require Asp.Net so work only on Windows platform.

You should think about the software that you need to install on your website and then check the OS it is compatible with. If you say it is going to be an eCommerce based website then you could use linux as most software's are compatible with it.
