Default SAS over SATA

I was looking at your High end Dedicated servers and observed that you offer SAS drives along with them rather than normal SATA drives. Is there any reason for that. Does it affects servers performance in any aspect ?

Yes, its right that we provide SAS drives with our High end Dedicated servers. SAS drives are much superior as compared to SATA drives. SAS drives offer 15000 RPM while SATA drives provide 7200 RPM. So SAS drives offer double speed than SATA drives which definitely enhances server's performance and gives user more speed.

SAS based storage subsystems is the native dual port capability of each SAS drive, providing a redundant path to each drive in the event of a controller failover. SAS drives also safeguard data integrity via their comprehensive verification/error correction capabilities.

I have heard that if you use RAID, the system takes more time because it needs to copy the same content on both the drives. So even if it is 15000 rpm, it will be divided, so each drive will get only 15000/2=7500 rpm. Is this right?

Nope, there is nothing like that. 15000 rpm is the speed of individual SAS hard drive and having RAID 1 does not mean that the speed gets divided. You have a misconception regarding RAID 1, I will also clear that. RAID 1 is offered to provide a exact copy of data on both the hard drives. There are 2 hard drives in RAID 1 and each SAS hard drive will offer you 15000 rpm. RAID 1 is generally used for Data Mirroring purpose and has no relation in dividing the speed of Hard drives.

Sorry, but I am confused, Ross! You mean RAID is kind of Server mirroring, isn't it? So, I won't need to keep any backup, right?

Yes, if you use RAID 1 you do not need to take backup any more. You will have same data on both drives, so in case your primary disk fails, data can be retrieved from your secondary drive. So there is always a backup of your data on your secondary drive.
