Default Web Hosting requirements- Remote mysql, smtp, imap etc

Good afternoon everyone,

I've been trawling the web for the last couple of hours, trying to find a web hosting company that has all my requirements.

This isn't for me, but a friend that runs his own business. I've been developing a piece of software for him using vb, that gets installed to a local pc, but uses mysql via their online website currently with Fasthosts.... Basically it is a Contact Management System (much like a CRM, but locally installed).

Now, I really dislike Fasthosts and I want to him move off them. The reasons are many, but one is a need for a nice user friendly control panel would be great, so Web Hosting UK already covers that (yay cpanel!).

Other requirements are:
- remote access to mysql without the need to register the ip of the remote user (Multiple users, various IPs)
- decent response rate (re remote mysql)
- user access to creating cronjobs.
- user support forum for the webhost themselves (Web Hosting UK has this covered, otherwise I would not be here!)
- smtp
- imap
- pop3
- 'catch all' email address
- php magicquotes
- php globals user switchable

At some point, his bus will be implementing their own server with their own databases etc, but until this, web hosting is the cheapest way to go for them.

He will be running eGroupware and OrangeHRM for his employees, as well as a static main page advertising his business.

Can anyone confirm that my other requirements above are doable under Web Hosting UK, especially the remote mysql access.

cheers

sidz

ps. I really like a webhost that has a community forum that it regularly uses to keep in touch with their customers. Spot On!!

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in WebHosting UK's services.

We provide cPanel with shared linux hosting and Plesk control panel with Windows shared hosting accounts. All the above features are supported with our shared hosting plans except the MySQL remote access feature. If you need remote mysql access, you will have to consider one of our Semi-Dedicated or Dedicated Server. We can provide you cPanel control panel with both Semi-Dedicated and Dedicated Server.

Please refer the following url to view the semi-dedicated and dedicated server plans and pricing details:

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Aaah, poo!

Unfortunately remote mysql is a biggie, and going for dedicated (even semi-dedi) servers is far too over the top for what they need, and more expensive than required

Guess I'll have to keep searching... unless anyone else has any recommendations...
sorry gang.

thanks anyway

Hi,

I might be missing the point here, however it sounds like a VPS maybe a good option depending on uptime required and how much you have to spend.

You could configure mysql as you wish then. Such has mysql tunneled through SSH for more security, allowing users to login with a Uname and pass or local key file but keeping the entire connection secure.

Cheers

The remote MySQL access feature is supported with VPS hosting as well but due to limited availability of resources there might be some performance issues and that's the reason I've suggested you to opt for one our semi-dedicated or dedicated server but if you want you can give a try with a VPS.
