Hi everyone,
It's 2.00am on Sept. 11th and I'm confussed and tired so please forgive me if I type a load of rubbish. I've spent days looking for a
Linux VPS Hosting package from a company that is reputable. I've had such bad experiences in the past that I'm frightened to death by hosting companies that are here today and gone tomorrow.
There's a few questions I'd like to ask but have already forgotten what they were except for the following:
1. I'd like to have my own
Linux VPS but, never having had one before would like to know how easy it is to set-up and maintain?
2. If I have a couple of domains already that are registered elsewhere can I point them to my VPS and will I be able to have my own mail servers like mail.my.com?
3. Can I have my own error pages?
4. I want to set-up a free e-mail service for the Island I live on (sometime in the future) Not many people would use it, but it's something to relieve the boredom of the long winter nights up here in Orkney! I already have purchased software called DWmail and wanted to be sure it would be acceptable for me to use it on my
VPS and if the VPS would have the requirements I need. It requires:
PHP 4.1.0 or higher. Works with PHP 5
--with-imap, IMAP extensions to PHP (also know as IMAP c-client). Even if you only intend to use POP3 connection with DWmail you MUST meet this requirement.
PHP session support
Sending email support using PHP's mail() or using SMTP (local email accounts only)
At least one POP3 or IMAP4 mail server and email account to use with DWmail
PCRE (Perl Compatible Regular Expressions)
one of the following:
MySQL 3.23.x+
MySQLi 4.0.x, 4.1.x, 5.0.x
PostgreSQL
and ideally Zlib support for generating ZIP files
Would a VPS have these things or am I too tired?
5. Would I have my own name servers and IP address?
6. Am I able to reboot the server when I want to?
7. Would the basic
VPS hosting be powerful enough for the mail program?
I can't remember anything else at the moment but I'm sure the above is enough for you to be going on with!!!
Hope to hear from you and many thanks for any reply in advance.
Mike
I'm heading off to bed
