Default Windows Shared Hosting Vs Linux Shared Hosting

Hi,

Just wondering what are the pros/cons over windows/linux shared hosting? Only need a basic package as use my domains only for mail. Just wondered if there were any major advantages of one over the other?

Cheers

Welcome Darry to WebHosting UK

IMO, even windows hosting can handle mails very effectively. Choosing web hosting depends on platform you had used for developing your site, if you had used ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment or any other Microsoft’s product then going for Windows Hosting would be a better a option.

What works on Linux works on Windows, but Linux has been limited to Mssql & ASP, else they' both would have been matched I'd go for Linux when it comes to server level, but Windows isnt bad though, is it ?

Linux is more secured and stable than Windows.

Windows consumes more resource (RAM & Processor) than Linux, so Linux shows good performance than Windows.

If you are using MS SQL as a database than it is having a limitation regarding each database size, while MySQL database can be of any size.

Mail works fantastic on Windows as well as linux.

I don't agree with both th points you have put through.. Windows is secure + DB sizes on non-express versions are unlimited [LOL, will this result into a fight now..]

I've used both, Linux for sure runs more smoothly
I'm not sure about mail though..

In the past, I myself, have also had a dedicated server with both. Windows was nice n easy to use but uptime and the amount of ram and cpu consumed was a problem for us.

With linux we have better uptime, it can handle more socket connections as well.

If its just for mail then I'd choose the cheapest

Well, selecting an OS for your server totally depends on you. If you are comfortable with Windows then you should choose Windows and if you are comfortable with Linux then you should have Linux. It also depends on the OS you have used before. If you have used Windows for your desktop PC then you should not think that you should choose Windows for your server as well, because the server and your computer are different. If you have developed your website using asp, asp.net or any Windows based languages then you should choose Windows otherwise Linux is also good. You can choose Linux as an operating system as you do not have to spend much on Linux as it is open source. It also depends on the applications you wish to run on your server. Both the Operating systems have benefits and drawbacks. So it entirely depends on you to choose an operating system for your server.

i run a game server, and my website runs of 4 differant servers.

1. The website and mail, this is linux.
2. Forums, this is run from windows 2003.
3. Auto patcher, this is windows 2003.
4. Client download, this is linux.

I use windows 2003 servers, as i can remote desktop to them and change files in real time without having to keep upload files via FTP. My auto patch is updated almost weekly, and is almost 6 gigs in total, so being able to edit file on the server and people being able to get the lastest verison staight away makes my life so much easier, and saves a lot of up loading.

My website, which has been the same for almost 2 years, is on linux, cus it cheap, and i hardly ever need to update the site, the site reads from my other windows servers to update the info that is in real time.

Depending on how big ur site is, how offen you are going to update your site will be a big factor when it comes to pciking your hosting. I started off 100% linux, uploading info via FTP, but as my game got bigger my needs got bigger.

I do perfer the windows server as i can use remote desktop which for me is better then control panels.
