We have some existing customers running Real Streaming on Linux Servers and some on windows as well.
We use Helix software on linux servers so let me know what exactly your requirements are. Our guys have expertise in setup of video streaming servers.

Thx for reply. What i may be looking for in the near future is real time streaming not progressive. I am not sure what helix software is and absolutely no knowledge of what a true streaming server is! But what I hopefully will need soon is something that can stream in real time like the link below (although not using windows media)

If you can provide path to the feeds then we can configure real time streaming. Helix is the most popular Realtime video Streaming software.
You can take a look at realnetworks.com/for more information.

Helix Proxy is a software-based proxy products from Realnetworks. It helps to reduce bandwidth costs by eliminating redundant data transmission between the server and proxy and also increases your server performance
True Streaming : It is a technique by which a media can be viewed over a network in realtime without downloading the file.

Thx admin / Harry.
As you can tell, I haven't really explored the theory behind live streaming, but there also seems to be a distinct lack of info on the net.
I will have a look at the link for realnetworks and see what I can learn.
If you have a look at my link above for the hogs breath live stream, that is exactly what my associate is looking for. I take it that the cameras that we purchase would supply the software to link to the server via pc ??????
Could you give me a "ballpark" figure on the cost of streaming server something like the link above, the server costs!
I know the cost will increase with bandwidth, but I have no idea how much bandwidth would be required and how many hits they were likely to have.

can flix be used with the helix server? As mentioned no experience with any of it but I do know the on2 VP6 encoder is fantastic. Flash video has gone from absolute rubbish to brilliant with Flash 8 VP6 encoding.

According to me you have to buy some extra hardware such as capture card to grab video files on to your machine, then this video is encoded for broadcasting through your streaming server.

Yes sorry, I think i posed the wrong question there. My question meant to relate to how you get the video capture to the server for live streaming. I now know the answer to that but was confused as some cameras come with software for this purpose.
I really need to know if i can use other software for producing other than real producer with the helix server?
Can you give me a price for the helix server hosting? ballpark! different packages?
Or point me in the direction of someone that may know?
Thx

Streaming software running on the server will take feed from your local machine or whatever source you provide.
If you can upload the feed on server with FTP and then allow it to broadcast simultaneously then that would be the easiest solution with low cost. If you don't want any delay in broadcasting then the cost on your end would be high.
Our cost will be below £250 per month on hardware and setup but you need to take care of your expenses on your end for providing the feed.

I guess it depends on the bandwidth I need but was thinking (without any knowledge) a price somewhere in the region of £40-60 per month.
I assumed this as I didn't realise we were talking about having a dedicated server also????

I mentioned pricing for dedicated server. If you don't expect too many concurrent connections ( less than 5 ) then VPS can be sufficient but if you are planning to launch it on bigger level then you need a dedicated server. You will get 3000 GB bandwidth with a dedicated streaming server.
