Angry Extremely angry

Just transferred the bulk of my 40 domains and sites to discover that on my server they have disabled popen() - and I need it to send blasted attachments.

Further, some of fantastico apparently doesn't run on it either so what the *** are they doing offering products that can't and wont run as extras????

Further more, they want to charge me £35 to move them across to a platform that can do it for me.

I suspect that 40 domains (one with 1.5million records in a DB) didn't give them a clue that maybe I needed all singing all dancing, hosting eh?

I am very VERY VERY ANNOYED BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you get my point.

Isn't there also a case that if you knew you needed this stuff you should have asked first?

I said I wanted to use the functionality in fantastico, so it seems reasonable to expect if it was on offer, I could at least use it?

Fancy offering product bolt ons that wouldn't work with "my" server when it is clearly offered on the reseller platform.

The fact they are not supported by webhosts should mean they don't set em up, not that you cant run them even though we mention them. I suspect DTI might be interested in this one.

not that it helps you any, but i would have gone for a vps rather than a reseller, simply because you have control over things like the php.ini files etc.

I think my comments about not speaking the same language stand as in a previous post. My ability to be psychic is OBVIOUSLY AT FAULT.

As a customer you expect us to keep our servers safe from hackers and at the same time you need popen () enabled. We have few servers reserved for customers with such requirements but it is clarified to them that we wont be responsible for security of websites. If your websites are hacked then all we can do is restore its latest backup from our backup servers for no cost but you should not be bashing all over forum if similar thing happens to you.

let me know the ticket number you have raised to get your accounts moved on a different server and I'll make sure that you don't get charged for the move.

Seems like a fair comment by Admin, popen is a widely recognised security risk and one that many people would assume was not enabled. Sorry mate but if you rely on something that is inherently unsafe you should check that the host allows for it first, or go VPS/Dedicated where your site getting hacked will only affect you.

Dear Admin,

I believe that yesterday late I solved the problem myself by using smtp functions instead.

I am all for security, and popen was never a question at my other host.

I was, quite natuarally annoyed at more money outlay as my orginal discussions with your company led me to believe I could use shared SSL on my ecommerce sites (and as my last host had this with a full certificate so no browser warnings) BUT I had to then buy a domain, buy a certificate and then write my own secure server scripts as the errors would be unacceptable to the public, although I have read about self cert to know it would be fine, they wouldn't.

Further more promises made have had to be reinforced although I admit that when pushed support did come up trumps with my 1.5 million records db.

My main beef however was that this type of information is not readily available and as I have already posted, getting this type of information from staff is quite difficult, sometimes as though we are on different planets.

Whilst I acknowledge that you have some smart guys in tech support - you know who you are, some of them do not have the language to deal with bigger issues and therein lies my frustration and others.

I do appreciate your offer, although I believe all is OK on the attachments score.

It is however naughty to offer product that will NOT currently run on all servers and there should be a caveate somewhere to state which do and which dont.

Whilst in essence you have some good potential as a host, to make you truely great, your information about what is and what isn't is lacking. For most of us, hosting is a means to an end, and we use and abuse scripts to do the job. For instance, there is no point in reinventing the wheel and some scripts are great at doing nasty jobs. So come on get that information out there, even if you need to password it so all of us can work WITHIN the security perameters as much as possible.
