Actually, blogging is like publishing your thoughts online. It's like having a diary where you write about your day, or your ideas, or your hobbies..your business.. things like that. The only difference from your journal/diary is that, its open for the public.
It helps people in a lot of ways, like when they share their thoughts, they can initiate good interaction. If its about their interests, then they can find people as well who has the same passion. If it's about business, then its a perfect way or advertising or selling something. |

it makes you advertise your product in a more detailed and personal way tp your customers, you can mention its features and advantages casually, you could also update clients/customers anytime of the day and most of all since blogging is the hype these days then that alone makes it an advantage

I think the effectiveness of blogging may depend on the industry you work in. I was talking to someone yesterday who is pretty young (young enough to own an Xbox 360 anyway), the CEO of their own business and who works online every day. When I spoke to them about a blog they had no real idea of what one was and didn't really feel that would go out of their way every day to read one. Having spoken to a few more people in the same field I got the impression that that was the general feeling.
There's a danger that just because we are very aware of trends and technologies on the Web that others are the same. Try asking a few members of the public whether they use an RSS reader and see what I mean.

People who are aware of the current market trends may find blogging to be outdated by now and there are still hundred thousand of people who may not be aware of something like this.I agree with Kev that it really depends from person to person and the field that he belongs to.
