vps ldap address book configuration

Hi all,
does anybody have any experience of configuring their Linux vps so that you can store address books from outlook and thunderbird on it. I have been looking around learning about LDAP, but I am loathe to tinker with the settings of my server needlessly as it is hosting websites.
