What type of account do you have with paypal? For which country you are looking for alternate solutions?

If you're going to accept only credit cards I would suggest 2CheckOut they have a great support staff but you have to pay the first setup fees or you can use MoneyBookers gateway , they start processing CC payment and you won't spend anything to have your portal to accept these CCes.

Or may be look for WireCard , it's also a great shot on the net to start your business with.

It really isn't as black and white as "this one is better than that one". You are going to have to read through the different companies to find the one that suits your business. Check the rates, check the fees, check how you can integrate the gateway into your website. Read and look into this shaded grey industry. It's not black and white.

I only have experience with one provider, Protx, but it has been very positive. It was the first time I had done an e-commerce site but it was easy to build a shopping cart and integrate it with them. Price wise they are the best I have found as yet, they charge £20 per month or 10p per transaction if you process over 1000 orders in a quarter.

As the others say it is good to look around and get a feel for things too.
