MS access and Mysql

Anyone have any experiance with using MS Access as a frontend and Mysql as the back end?
I use linked tables but am wanting to know if it is possible to only update certain columns using this method. Thereby protecting certain columns from being updated......is it possible?

I've only used ms access for my own backend data manipulation ( I prefer it to the php myadmin or tools5 interfaces) although the ODBC module is a bit twitchy.

I'm pretty sure you can only apply permissions on a per-table basis, I've never heard of per-field protection. It is possible to hide fields from the main view.

Probably your best option would be to use Access forms for manipulating and displaying the data, that way you can apply permissions per form element.

I don't know about you but I'd never be able to sleep at night if my users were allowed to edit naked database tables.

Hi, thx for the reply.
I wouldn't normally use ms access or allow database tables to be manipulated this way, but this is a request from a client and only he will be able to edit the data.
I did create the usual admin forms etc, for him but he wanted to be able to edit the data quickly, and use software he is very used to.

i have found the ODBC very interesting to say the least, i have even started using it to edit some of my databases, but as my original question (and as you pointed out), a bit nervous about not having some of the tables protected.

I have however sinse writting the original post, redefined the database tables so that less damage could be done, i also am backing up the database frequently. I guess i will see how it goes.
