I have tried this and it is showing me some good results with local searches. It is pretty beneficial for the people who are into local business.

It is certainly good for local businesses if Google is going local as users will be able to find services locally, however, I think due to this reason, the websites which offer services all over the World will suffer a lot and their business will definitely get affected which is not a very good sign.

Opinions on this are most welcome

The iPhone now has something similar in-built. I was searching for an alternative Starbucks earlier this week and it was brilliant for finding alternative shops.

well knowledge networks

you can't really make a whole lot
but it's very easy

they send you surveys & you get payed for your oppinion.

In addition of submission of the site in Google LBS, if you also add your website in the top level of trusted local/vertical directories I think it would have positive impact on the local search algorithm.
