IMO, when we raise point of server firewall, it's a end less topic to discuss, and while a good firewall is an essential part of network security, it does not work in isolation. We should also make a note of network security with in the entire scenario.

Firewall is basically a combination of two network server function which are a gateway and a proxy. A gateway machine is a facilitator and A proxy server is a mediator.

A security firewall, is facilitate both securing you server as well as it work as a mediator. It also facilitates the gateway functions that all computers on the LAN need to communicate outside. It mediates, in that computers on the LAN have their communications proxied by, and potentially filtered by the firewall.

Normally, the unwanted or we can say unused ports are being turned off in Linux firewall, and listens to network ports designated by the system administrator configuring the firewall. Then the packets inbound and outbound on those ports,are being examined and applies a set of rules (again, part of firewall configuration set by the sys admin) to determine whether an individual packet should be allowed. These rules can be based on allowable originating and destination hosts, ports, packet header information, or any combination of these. The firewall looks at each packet in isolation; hence statelessness.

The current generation of firewalling code in Linux provides this higher level of functionality. This code is based on net filter, a set of loadable kernel modules that extends Linux's firewalling capabilities to allow session-based packet examination. Performing these operations at the kernel level increases performance, assuming your IT staff is comfortable with configuring and compiling a custom Linux kernel. Relying on kernel modules also means that when new functionality is needed, it can be added on a module by module basis without tampering with the kernel as a whole.
