Private File Sharing to remain legal in EU, As per the Members of the Legal Affairs' committee " criminal sanctions should only apply to those infringements deliberately carried out to obtain a commercial advantage. Piracy committed by private users for personal, non-profit purposes are therefore also excluded". More news at European parliament press release.

Sadly this isn't as ground-breaking as it sounds for a number of reasons:

* it hasn't been passed by Parliament;

* it could be years before a particular member state gets around to implementing it;

* it only protects private file sharing from criminal prosecution so the RIAA or whatever their equivalent is could still sue you; and

* copyright holders could argue that sites which allow you to find/download torrents or other p2p technologies, and which run ads, are still liable to criminal prosecution because they are making money out of assisting your piracy.

Still every little helps.
