Looking for Design Advice

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for help.

I've had websites for years, I used to design them myself in Dreamweaver and have always hosted them here with webhostinguk. My current 2 sites are very dated now and I need to get them up to date.

I have:

1 - A business site that really needs some work. My HTML skills are non-existent and my Dreamweaver skills are really not up to par. I've tried Joomla and can't get on with it, it seems complicated and less than instinctive. I need a professional look and the site to be easily up datable. Do I need to suck it up and re-new my Dreamweaver skills or is there a CMS package out there that is easy to use and looks good?

2 - A photography site that I really need to look good. I'm leaning towards a Wordpress site but have only ever used it for blogging.Any thoughts on Wordpress as an alternative to the Dreamweaver/HTML approach?

I would suggest that due to the problems that you have faced that you use Wordpress. I know that you might not be initially keen with this but it will offer a lot of features without being too technical. In the future when you are comfortable with this you can then move onto using a CMS such as Joomla and then hopefully eventually moving onto using Dreamweaver to code your own sites.

HTML is getting a bit old hat now anyway - its usually XHTML and some server side scripting such as PHP with a sprinkling of CSS for design purposes.

I agree with David here. WordPress is a powerful application you can use on your website and you can install and manage themes for your website directly via the WordPress Administration Panel. WordPress allows you to either show the first page as posts or as an actual standard page, so in theory, you can use WordPress as an entire website manager, allowing you to manage all the necessary content via the WordPress Administration Panel.

Creating themes for WordPress isn't the easiest thing in the world, but there are plenty of themes you can choose from within WordPress to install and use, and you can even get some company to design you a unique WordPress theme if you wanted to.

A wordpress blog would indeed be a good idea. I believe that will also have you get the photography site up. You could upload your photos and visitors and members could also leave comments on it. Blogging is a powerful platform that combines all the great features of text, images, audio /video and more.
