Default Upgrading Magento

Hi all,

I have tried searching magento forums etc but I can't find any instructions that i actually understand

Basically the community edition of Magento commerce has been upgraded to a new stable release (1.4.1.1), i am currently using version 1.4.1.0, but as i'm not yet 'open for business', i think i'll upgrade now while i havent got much content to lose if i screw it up.

So what i would like to know is - how exactly do i upgrade?

Like i said i have searched but i'm still no wiser with what i need to do.

Thanks for all your help (again lol)

Russell

Hello Russell,

You can upgrade Magento to it's latest version using your Magento admin panel. I am sure someone from our tech support department will help you to know with exact steps.

Thanks for the reply Harry.

I have looked in Magento admin System>magento connect>magento connect manager but I arrive at an error page with this info
Quote:
Error: Please check for sufficient write file permissions
Your Magento folder does not have sufficient write permissions, which this web based downloader requires.

If you wish to proceed downloading Magento packages online, please set all Magento folders to have writable permission for the web server user (example: apache) and press the "Refresh" button to try again.
Any idea which magento folders this refers to? surely it cant mean all of them can it?

maybe as you suggest Tech support can advice me, or maybe another magento user?

Thanks
Russell

Hi Russell,

Please PM me exact domain name under which you have install Magento and getting files/folders permission error while upgrading it. I will correct those files/folders permission and will PM you to proceed again.

Question Thanks Keiran

Hi,

First of all thank you Keiran (from support) for helping me with the Magento upgrade.

Just a quick question re your email

Quote:
I have now installed stable release (1.4.1.1) at following URL link using same database/media as main domain so it should be work fine. Please check this installation and let me know if you want to keep magento on this URL or move it to main domain.
As you added the upgrade in a folder (mydomain.com/shop), and like you say the install you did for me uses the SAME database/media as the original install (mydomain.com), does this mean that if i delete the original install of magento, the install that you done for me at /shop will still work ok, or do i need to leave the original install where it is?

Grrrrrr non techy speaking
confused myself now but hope you understand what i mean.

Thanks
Russell

Hello,

From Keiran's reply, it seems that he had installed the updated version of magento for you in shop directory and also seems he had restored a database which you're using for your main domain with a new database name.

So if in case you delete the original install of magento for your main domain then, the another magento which kieran did for you i.e (yourdomain.com/shop) will work fine.

Also keiran was asking for your confirmation for whether you want to run your magento from URl yourdomain.com/shop or want to run it from your main domain.

So I request you to please update it in email so that the change will be carried out accordingly.

NOTE::
Before deleting any installation, it would be fine for both of us to take a complete backup of your data so as to avoid data loss if in case there would be any. And FYI, I've done my job..

Thanks for the reply VConnor,

I did actually reply to the email that Keiran sent me.

I would have prefered the magento script to run on the main domain, BUT it is OK left as it is in the /shop directory, I just wanted to make sure that it would not 'break' the script (in /shop), if i deleted the version which is currently on the main domain.

Thanks
Russell

Hi Russell,

I have explained magento configurations for both main domain and /shop folder in Ticket GNP-33877-493 and I hope it will clear your doubt.

Kieran A.
