Question Upgrading magento to 1.5.0

Hello everyone.

I am currently using magento 1.4.1.1 on a production site, however I want to upgrade to the latest stable version (1.5.x)

I know that I could send a support ticket to ask, but for now I thought I'd ask here....

I have not used the upgrade thingy in magento but have uploaded the latest version to a new folder so it doesn't interfere with my current set up (incase i mess it up). Once i've got the new version set up i can use a php redirect to the new shop so the folder where i put it is not an issue for me.

I have got to the stage where all files for the latest version have been uploaded, but i HAVE NOT run the install script yet, this is where i'd like some help please.

- How do I install this with all of my current product listings, and item configs (sizes etc) etc without having to add all items again to the new shop?

Basically an upgrade but also a duplicate as its in a different folder.

Sorry if thats confusing.

Any advice in simple terms please as i'm not too tech minded

Many thanks
Russell

Having just done a major upgrade from a 1.2 install to a 1.4 the process was pretty easy.

I would avoid moving upto 1.5 for a few months just incase any major bugs turn up.

The best thing to do is duplicate your db and files to a staging domain/sub-domain.

Working on the staging domain disable all cache options and flush them for good measure.

from what I can remember delete all files and folder EXCEPT the media folder, any teamplates you're using and your config.xml or at least make sure you have backups.

Upload the latest installation and run the install script, this will automagicly update your database and get you setup and running, don't forget to switch you cache back on.

I'm basing this from memory so have a snout around magento forums for major upgrades just to be on the safe side, but remeber to always work with a copy instead of your production site.
