Default who's to blame...very slow ftp'ing

Evening All

Help....who's to blame?

I have hosting with Web Hosting UK called speedyonline.biz and is on the kent server. I'm having alot of problems trying to FTP to it, it always times out after a few files have been uploaded and eventually it stops allowing any conenctions because too many connections from this IP address occurs. I've been trying for days to upload my site, it manages a few files and gives up. I've tried all available settings on various FTP packages etc.. It also times out when using Cpanel and actually access the site.

I have no problems FTP'ing to my other website hosted by a different firm and virtually any other website I have viewed.

I have raised several support tickets and have been told all is OK their end, I've spoken to Pipex Homecall (my ISP) and again its all OK but will submit a slow site support ticket tomorrow (once i've completed 24 hours monitoring).

I've even tried different PC's and ADSL routers, all to no avail and I'm starting to get a little annoyed.

The traceroute is below:-

Hi Stu,
I am suffering similar symptons you are but am 100% convinced that this is an isp problem. I too am a pipex customer and believe the problem lies with the Tiscali servers.
I spoke (again) to Pipex support yesterday which costs me a further £6 in phone charges, and the guy i spoke to was unbelievably honest with me. He told me that Tiscali has taken nearly all of Pipex customers and moved them to the Tiscali servers causing outages, bottlenecking and many other problems associated with having too many accounts on one server.

My main point was the usual ridiculous slow speeds I have had over Easter, but mainly corrupt, messed up web pages. Now the support guys on here will be able to offer the correct terminology as I haven't a clue, but i think it is something to do with threshold, latency values which help stop errors whilst data packets are send back and forth. It appears that I seems to be getting errors on most webpages but not all. Certainly having problems using ftp and cpanel.

Maybe your problem is totally unrelated to mine, but as soon as I saw 'pipex' in your message it seems likely.

As far as your 24 hour speedtest: If you are getting over 400KBS down speed then they won't do anything about it. Apparently BT won't recognise a fault with the line unless it is below this.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news but as i said, your problems could stem from something else... Good luck

We've had many such complaints in last 3 - 4 days. We have requested our Network Engineers to communicate with Tiscali and get this sorted.

I will let you know once I get any update from them.

Thanks for the reply's. It does sound similar to yours jon123. Homecall have always used the Tiscali backbone but its got very bad in the last few weeks, around th time they were bought by Tiscali. When I spoke to their customer support yeaterday he said it did sound like a problem - at least the conservation should have been recorded !!!

Adminsitrator - can I add my name to the compaints for slow speeds especially as I use Homecall (Tiscali) as an ISP.

I use 34sp.com to host my personal site (have done for years) it took 30 seconds to ftp a backup copy of speedyonline to it and as a work around try and server to server direct ftp. If this works i'll give everyone a bit of time to sort the issues !!!

Cheers

Stu.

What is it with Tiscali? All of a sudden, dozens of prevoiusly happy pipex customers are popping up and saying "my service is really bad".

Putting every pipex customer on already overloaded tiscali servers must be the main problem I think.
I asked pipex accounts today how many had cancelled their subscription since the takeover. Obviously he didn't tell me but replied with a "I couldn't possibly say" remark.

I must admit i feel sorry for those who work on the support side there. They obviously get plenty of abuse, and as I already mentioned previously the last call i made to support i couldn't believe how honest this techie was with me. Just shows how fed up he must be having to go through the usual 'speedtests, check your router, filter, settings, blah, blah, blah' when he knows the problem lies with the service.

I am curious to know what the problem is here though. My speed has increases over the past couple of hours and am browsing ok. All websites are fine including visiting here, but my websites aren't. Also tried another couple sites owned by other clients here with same results. Now I know it is tiscali as everyone else can view my sites fine and so can i at work.
So curious to know how tiscali is causing problems here....anyone know?

Hello Jon,

Our Network Engineers are communicating with Tiscali and we should get this sorted tonight. As there's nothing wrong within our network so we need to wait for Tiscali to sort out few things.

I will update this thread once our Network Engineers get some positive response from Tiscali.

Excellent stuff, I shall wait and see. I've managed to find a PHP script to ftp from one remote server to another, it took 12 seconds to transfer my site this morning !!!

Cheers

Should be interesting to find out what they have to say.

If anyone wants to test access to their own websites, servers or any other machine, a great utility is winMTR. its downloadable from sourceforge.net

I use it for testing packet loss and identifying if slow website access is network based or server based. If the former, it tells me where the problem lies!

are you using pureftp or proftp? I had a problem with an old host where ftp was slow. The cpanel said it was using pure, but from the client (cuteftp) it logged in using proftp and was slow.

The host did a cpanel update and it cleared itself. He could not identify a problem his end as it was connecting perfectly fine, it was only when I connected from a remote site that the issue arose.

As an aside, I take it there is no issue with your security settings?

No, I've tried several FTP packages all time out even after changing all the settings eg timeouts, max number of connections, it also occurs when using cpanel. I'm expercing connection problems with a few other sites, affiliatefuture.co.uk is the worst. I've also tried on my other computer, (a complete different build to my laptop) and same problems.

I've spoken to Pipex Homecall ... sorry should call them Tiscali (the women I spoke to did !!) said I was not one of the migrated accounts so it should not affect me but to include tracert's etc... of the sites I have a problem with. Where I think the bottle neck is, it is registered to Tiscalli.

My speed is 4.6 meg down and 400k up which is slightly slower than i used to get, 6 meg down but the the web browsing has diffently got worse within the last week. I could live with it for a while if my own site was not affected but I'm trying to test and upload it.

Cheers

Stu

Stu, have you tried WinMTR
This is the output from here for the site you mentioned, its showing slight packet loss.

Thanks for the file, hops 11 and 12 appear to be the problem.
