301 domain redirections
I am struggling with this.
I have a new domain (thanks to over 30 posts :p ) but can't get it to redirect to where I want it too.
Not sure if we are allowed to put domains on here so will use mydomain.
Anyway - the domain is mydomain.info It is hosted on here as a sub domain under otherdomain.co.uk I want to point it to a folder (forum) within there.
So I thought the redirection should be mydomain.otherdomain.co.uk/forum/index.php
But that doesn't work - 403 forbidden
So I tried mydomain.info/forum/index.php and that didn't work.
I have tried lots of different ones so I am obviously just not getting this at all. Not the sort of thing I am used to doing.
I need the mydomain to stay in the URL window - any help would be appreciated - have checked the help but it didn't help - cant get on chat live and already have lots of tickets in support so don't want to bother them again.

Hi Cassie, not sure if I understand but once you setup a subdomain, you drop the www from the front of the url i.e: as opposed to If the redirect isn't working, try creating a .htaccess file for redirection.
Open notepad, or similar
Type :
redirect 301 http://www.mynewdomain.com /forum/
(where forum is path to forum...usually /forum/)
Make sure you save file as *all files, and call it .htaccess
Upload it to the root of your website. Also notice the space between the mynewdomain address and the forum redirect
The above will seemlessly direct any visitors who click on your new domain name to the forum
Note: if you already have a .htaccess file in the root of your site, simply edit it and add the line above to the bottom of it.
Sorry if this is not what you were asking

I think that is what I wanted to do but it's not working. when I create the file I get an internal server error instead of the 403 forbidden error.
I think I might just change the index.html page to a sort of splash page or perhaps do away with the forum folder and put the files from that folder in the main site.

I was just thinking - I could use <META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" content="0.001;URL=http://www.mydomain.info/forum/index.php"> and put it in the index.html page.
I have used this before but does it work with all browsers?
Is there a better way?

It doesn't work on all browsers but does on the latest.
The best way is the .htaccess file, The 500 error is caused by either the path does not exist or incorrect, but can also be caused by server config.
Meta redirect will be ok though.

I've just thought though - with META TAG the destination URL will be replaced and I don't really want that.
I wonder why the redirection thingy isn't working in cpanel? I must just be using the wrong path. Would it help if I put the actual names etc on here or pm'ed you if that isn't allowed?
It's not the only thing that isn't working for me in cpanel - I also have problems with filters and, as said before, live chat.

You can pm my Cassie if you prefer, but I can't see any reason why you couldn't post the true urls on here. But upto you

I don't post my website for a couple of reasons. Personally I don't like posts where people are just posting their site to get hits - so I don't do it.
Secondly - I am an amateur web designer - self taught - and know that my site is not exactly pretty or up to date in design. Therefore I have never put it in the "review my site" section as I really can't take criticism. I guess I think that if I post my URL here someone nasty might try and 'guide' me - especially as I use frames and not everyone likes them. I like my sites, they are quick & easy to navigate and they serve their purpose - making money, but I am not secure enough to let others 'review'.
I have pm'ed you Jon123 and eagerly await any help you can give. :p

Sorry Jon123 I have tried everything. It is a add-on domain but no combination of words seems to work.
I really don't see why this is such a problem. I have many domains with 123REG and although I can't stand the company because they never email you back, the redirects are simple. It is called frame redirection in there and works ok most of the time. You just say you want knitting-forum.info to point to craftbits.co.uk/knitting-forum/knit-forum/index.php - simple as that. Why oh Why won't it work in cpanel.
Tech Support have actually reverted me back to the old version of cpanel because email filters were not working so there are obviously some problems.
Yes Jon123 I have put my domains in this post - your words about my site were so nice :p - hope no-one else is nasty

It is strange.
With that forum being empty, would you not be able to move it to the .info directory?
I know your redirect should work, and so should a .htaccess file. Maybe the cpanel downgrade will sort your problem

I got the following answer from Tech Support - can anyone translate it into plain english please.
The problem you are facing with the Addon domain is because cPanel does not create Add on domains in folder/folder. The Add on domain can only be created in a folder which is immediately under the public_html folder. The Add on domain functions on the sub domain system and the website is located at the sub domain's location, it is the server configuration that shows the website at the URL itself instead of the sub domain URL. So you can only create the Add on domain to point to a folder that is exactly under public_html folder. If you want it to be set up that way, we can forward it manually from the server but that may not be done through the cPanel.
I am very new at cpanel so really need a step by step details of how to do whatever they are asking above.

Tech support have changed the forwarding for me but that didn't really answer my question. I have other sites I need to do this for so need to know how to do it myself.
Also it is not showing the URL in the window - it is showing the actual file name which is not what I wanted. When I told tech sup that I got the following which AGAIN I really cannot make head nor tail of. Can someone PLEASE put this into plain English for me.
"I would like to inform you that the current Add on domain setup that you have made in the cPanel for the domain knitting-forum.info will not allow frame forwarding for the added domains. If you want to set up addon domains to point to their respective folders directly so that the URL remains of the domain it self, you will have to note :
Suppose you want to set up ad Add on domain knitting-forum.info, when you add it in the cPanel, it will create a folder knitting-forum under the public_html folder and all the web files of this domain should be uploaded to this folder, if this is followed, there is nothing else you need to do, the domain will call the website from its respective folder.
You should not upload the website files to a sub folder inside the Add on domain's folder."

Just a quick update on this issue for anyone with a similar problem.
The latest is that this type of thing cannot be done through cpanel but can be done through other control panels. They have set it up for me and it seemed to work OK until I went into my admin panel on the forum. Then I just kept getting error pages. There were also occasions on the main customer forum which were getting errors so I just asked them to remove all forwarding - the site now works OK but not with the redirected url.
I will therefore probably be moving the domain elsewhere as all the other hosters I have had (and there have been a few) this is not a problem for them.
