Difference between domain registrar and registry

I have heard two terms registry and registrar. Are these terms same or are different from each other ?

Registries provide with the index for the domain names. A registry is the central repository that ensures that any given domain name should be allocated only once. Registrars are responsible for maintaining the registration details for a domain name that includes information about the owner of the domain name. Domain name owners do not directly interact with the registry, they maintain their details through the registrar who updates the registry on behalf of the domain name owner.
