What is a Top Level domain

I want to decide a domain name for my website and I am really very confused with various domain names like .com or .net. So can you let me know the difference between each one of them, so that I can decide on the domain name.

Various Top level domains (TLD'd) are .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov. Out of these domains, .com and .net can be registered by anyone. .org domains are registered by different commercial organizations and .edu domains are registered by different educational organizations. .gov domains are registered only by government bodies and some documentation is required to register a .gov domain name.

The top level domain names are generally at the highest level in the hierarchy of domain name system. Normally the top level domain names are categorized in three main groups – categories, countries and multi-organizations. The countries are assigned with a 2 letter ISO country code and the categories group have a generic top level domain. In addition to this a group of international domain names has also been established.
