Default When your business name is already taken, what you do?

Hi..everyone

If you have a business and now you want to start your online presence best of course would be having a domain name same as your business. Chances are very slim that you would get it, most of the domains with any sane meaning are taken.

We can always take a variation, but I think that would give the business domain name owner a huge advantage of stealing away lot of your prospective visitors once your online venture is popular.

Question is what should we do if we find out the domain matching the business is already taken

thanks

At the end of the day though the website name means nothing unless you have a brand name/ image to protect, it's how you're indexed by search engines that ultimately counts.

If you have a Limited company in the UK then yourcompanyname.ltd.co.uk has been reserved for your exclusive use.

Sole traders / Partnerships it gets a bit more fuzzy. Came across a dispute a few years back over variations of 'Aaron Associates', when a firm that had only been trading 7 years tried threatening legal action over the domain name variation used by a small partnership that had been going 25 years. When they were informed of this legal proceedings were dropped and they scurried away, probably fearful of the boot now being on other foot.

At 3am in the morning ankle deep in water from a burst pipe, I don't care what the name of the plumber is I just want to know are they local and where's the phone number !

The same statement could be applied to any online venture or service

Yes as your brand name become much bigger you just have to take care of the domain name as those acquired domain could be very costly if you are going to buy it later. So at least buy you domain name such that you can utilize it later and then you don't have to worries for cost the domain name is going to have.

It is very important to reserve your business domain as soon as you possibly can. Every single day thousands of domain names are registered by people. You should try and register all domain names related to your business names. Also, as many extensions as you can.

Well that is one method, allthough it can get a bit expensive after all the '.tv' extension does not come cheap. Plus the number of posibble variations is set to become rather large when Ipv6 naming conventions become mainstream.

Surely better to have the one domain name and make sure your clients know it.

how can you buy as many extensions as you can. I don't think so that will help to make the domain name move in search engine optimization process because its not that easy to optimize your website domain name for each extension.
