Is buying expired domains a good idea?

I read on another forum, that buying expired domains would be a good way to increase traffic to your own site, because when they try to go to it they will be redirected to your site.

Good idea, or would it just hurt more than help?

It really depends on the rankings of that domain name. Check how good its traffic has been; and you may have some idea about diverting the traffic to your website.

I would like to suggest you is that domain name suits the theme of the website which is th most important concern , if not the expired domain name has its name opposite to the content which is present with in the website. As Sanersone reply-ed previously that you also have to check whether the traffic to the website is upto the mark as per your requirement.
