What do you think about domain hacks?

By domain hacks I mean sites like del.icio.us (now delicious.com). Are these good choices for domain names? Why or why not?

Can be a good source of earning if manged to grab few such HIDDEN domains names.

Does the search engine read those as the same. I can not think of many people who would put the periods in all the right places. So what are the benefits for web hosting a site on a hack domain?
