Would a new site on an old dot com outrank an already established dot net domain

Hi,

Just wondering would putting a site on an old dot com domain (And with a bit of backlink building) outrank an already established dot net domain with lots of backlinks? (Both are the exact same domain name)

Any info appreciated

It depends how you optimize the website. If you have better content than .net domain, you can get good backlinks. You can try to get backlinks from the same websites which link to .net domain.

Domain extension and age of domain both are considered by Google for ranking but it have very less importance, what is vital for better ranking is the quality of backlinks and content of your website.
Since you will be setting up a new website on OLD .com you will have to struggle hard for getting better position ( though it may have backlinks )
