Default Your name as a domain name

I notice that many website and blog owners name their websites or blogs after their own names. What do you think? When it comes to SEO, is it even advisable to use your own name as a domain name?

Well, you can definitely have a blog or site with a domain name of your name and it's actually a good idea if it's your personal blog or site. Also, if it's your personal blog or site and you have the domain of your name, it's easier for the users to remember it

That's a good point, thanks. I would love to have a website or blog named after my name, but unfortunately my name is not a common and "brandable" name. It's even tongue twisting LOL.

What's there in the name?
For example, the name GoDaddy, tuwcows and KickAssVPS all are quite strange but they are succesful domains in their feilds irrespective of the kind of domain name they use. So its all in our minds. You can start with any desired name provided you are ready to put in your efforts to make things happen.

You're probably quite lucky your name is unusual. Most common name combinations have been nabbed by domain squatters.

I have a personal domain of my last name but its nothing business related by any means. For me its just a place I can throw a ton of (for lack of a better word), junk, that other people might need to take a peek at. Nothing business related, I would but I do not have a cool last name.

There is no harm in using your name as your domain name. As long as it is still available, especially if you have unique name that would be rare thus, such domain name is not difficult to acquire and register.

Yes, there is no harm in choosing your name for the domain name. But it is quite rare that you will find it avaiable unless it is a very uncommon name and last name. All good domain names have already been taken. But on the other hand it can become a security issue also, any one who visits your website will know about your name and details can easily be found in the whois contact. So, be careful.

You won't find the most popular names available. and personally I think it is a bit of security issue to use your name as a a domain name. However, for people who know you it may not be an issue.

Yes its a nice idea but only if its your personal website... If the site is related to your business the the name should be related to theme of site or products

Even I would have gone for a domain which isn't common. In fact, I would appreciate if someone recognises my business or website for it's uniqueness. No wonder names like Google, Yahoo are popular enough

Edit/Delete Message
There is nothing wrong in giving your own name to the website. In case of a website it is a business/professional website; it is always preferable to give the company name to the website. Even when it comes to domain name; for a professional website, it is preferable to have a professional domain name as they identify the internet protocol and they are used for various networking tasks and application specific purposes.

Your name can be given to the website or blog only if it's yours and not related to any sort of business or firm. If it's related to a business or firm, you will have to choose a professional name for the domain and make sure that it suits the kind of business you have and the services you offer.
