Redemption period

"Redemption Period" [RGP] is a 30-day duration time after a registrar has deleted an expired domain. Five days after the redemption, domain went into "Pending Delete" during this time VeriSign holds the domain and it cannot be recovered.

Once domain expires, every registrars have a grace period during which time you can reactivate your domain. If you won't reactivate domain, domain will went into redemption period. Every registry has different fees to activate and renew the domain. Only the previous registrar has authority to request domain back else others must have to wait till registry release the domain and will available for registration again.
