.edu domain name registration.
======================
The .edu domain is one of the seven original top-level subdivisions of the Internet Domain Name System (DNS). The .edu domain is intended for accredited post-secondary educational U.S. institutions. It is managed under the authority of the United States Department of Commerce.
The .edu TLD belongs to the U.S. Department of Education. The .edu TLD is limited to U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited, i.e., the entire institution and not just particular programs, by agencies on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies. These include both
"Regional Institutional Accrediting Agencies" and
"National Institutional and Specialized Accrediting Bodies" recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
The U.S. Department of Commerce awarded management of the domain to
EDUCAUSE in October 2001.
EDUCAUSE is the sole domain registrar for registration of names in the .edu domain.
Requests for new names in the domain are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible institutions, and holders of .edu domain names must use the EDUCAUSE Web site to manage their domains and hosts. EDUCAUSE also is the exclusive provider of contact information for the .edu domain, available on the Whois server.

Security of .edu Internet Domain to Increase
September 3, 2009, Washington, D.C.—EDUCAUSE and VeriSign announced that the initiation of a project to enhance Internet reliability and stability. By the end of March 2010, the project will deploy a security system known as Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) within the .edu portion of the Internet, which EDUCAUSE manages under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce. When the project is completed, institutions whose domain names end in .edu will be able to incorporate a digital signature into those names to limit a variety of security vulnerabilities.
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the part of the Internet that translates names such as "educause.edu" into numeric addresses (for example, 198.59.61.90). All Internet applications—from electronic mail to online banking—depend on the accuracy and integrity of this translation. Over the years, Internet security experts have discovered a variety of ways that DNS translation may be compromised. The DNSSEC security system limits the problem by allowing owners of domain names to provide a digital signature that adds an extra level of authentication to the translation process.
1. At launch, DNSSEC will be optional for existing .edu domain holders.
2. There will be no extra charges for .edu domain names.
Eligibility requirements for obtaining a name in the .edu domain.
Note that institutional accreditation is required for .edu eligibility; program accreditation is not sufficient. Not all agencies accredit institutions. Some accredit only institutions, some accredit only programs, and others accredit both institutions and programs.
It is also important to note that, while every effort is made to keep the EDUCAUSE list up-to-date, the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies and State Agencies are the only official comprehensive lists of agencies.
