Default Domain Name

Is it possible to get a domain name similar to that of my competitor? Will I have to face any problems if I use the same domain and just change .com to say .net?

You can indeed register a domain name similar to your competitor with any extension as long as your competitor doesn't have a registered trademark over the name.

Hi Matt,

As Alexis said, you could possibly face issues with competitors if the name is trademarked. One of our forum members recently had a similar issue which can be located here..

That was really a good idea!

Purchase a domain name for just £6 and sell it for £500!

One question raised from it is, if I get my domain name trademarked then can I ask my competitor to change the domain name that he is currently using?

Yes, if you have your domain name trademarked and if your competitor is using your domain name then you can surely ask your competitor to change his domain name as the domain name is trademarked by you. If the domain name used by your competitor is not trademarked by you then you cannot ask him to change his domain name. You can also take a legal action on your competitor if he is using the domain name which is trademarked by you.

Thank you for sharing this informative post Matt. It is really important that one should know the basics of a domain name as it is really important to choose a good domain name if you want to setup a website. Also, Domain name is the most important if you wish to start your website. Domain name can play a very vital role in the success of your website. One should make sure that the domain name purchased should be legally transferred to your name so that you do not face any problem later on as there has been many cases in the past where there were ownership problems. For this reason, A domain name should be purchased from a well known domain name registrar or a web hosting provider. It is always better to have the domain name registered with your webhosting provider as it becomes easier for you to manage your domain name.
