Default Is this a scam?

I have a client in the US for whom I have designed and manage a website. They have been persuaded to use someone who is going to produce what they term a "website/blog" which will promote the client's products and supposedly improve their Google ranking. My client owns a number of domain names all of which point to the same site. I have been asked to set on one of these to use the domain name servers of a US hosting company called Host Gator instead of those of my own web hosting company. Why would they want this? If this blog site is genuine why not just point the domain to it? I'm sure my client is being conned here but I don't understand how.

Hi,

Many SEO companies have recently started creating multiple websites for promotion of a single website. They host all these SEO websites on different Class C IPs and add backlinks in those websites which point to the main website of their customer.

We host many such websites for SEO companies. They signup for multiple shared hosting plans and ask us to setup those websites on different shared servers we have. This helps them to improve rankings of their client's websites. This concept has worked well so far and google has found no solution to differentiate between such addon websites.

Thanks very much for that. I'm afraid I'm a bit out of my depth with the terminology but I think I follow. They set up multiple websites (with unique domain names?), hosted on different shared servers. These sites (real or redirected to a single real site?) include a link to the website being promoted and hence boost its ranking. A person or a bot visiting one of these sites sees a valid site extolling the virtues of the target site.

If that's correct then shouldn't it work without me having to change the name servers for one of my client's domains?

You will need to point nameservers to different servers where they host their addon domains used for boosting rankings of their real domain. You should not be concerned as long as they host their main website with you. You can suggest them to consider multiple shared hosting plans with us as we can host their addon websites on multiple shared servers. All our Shared Servers are UK based and backlinks from UK based websites will help them to boost their rankings in google.co.uk.
