Question Registering .edu & .gov domain names

Where one can get/register for .edu & .gov domain names? Is there any condition or qualification to get these domains?

.gov can only be registered by the government and .edu can only be registered by the goverment for an education institute ect ect.

Not sure why you wish to register .gov or .edu domain but you can get the .edu domains registered from educause.edu/edudomain/

Take a look at what information you need to give them to get a .edu domain. I am quite sure all your SEO hopes will be lost once you read those

Yes, these domains are not easy to acquire as it is reserved for specific organization those meet their eligibility conditions, for SEO purpose you can try out to get links from those site if you can.

Thanks everyone for answering my question, actually I observed on web hosting sites also on webhosting.uk.com on domain registration page they have almost all domains available like .com, .uk.com, .co.uk, .net etc but not the .edu & .gov so I was curious to know this.

Thanks for the link Administrator.

Admin - are you saying that ANYONE can get a .gov or .edu domain name?

I find that very difficult to believe. I have always assumed that they were only for registered Government websites or registered Educational websites and therefore trusted them more. If anyone can get one that will surely dilute the real meaning of them and therefore people will not trust them anymore.

No one can register .gov / .edu domains that easily. Alan said that he didn't see any option on our homepage to register .edu / .gov domains so I replied accordingly.

No matter if you decide to pay £1000 to someone but you wont get the .edu / .gov domains without genuine documentation. Previously we got a .edu domain registered for one of our customer ( School ) but the procedure is not easy at all.
