Personally I'd go short to start with. If it doesn't take off you can off load it. If it works out well, you can get a longer deal.

Yes Pumazooma, your view is quite right for those who are registering on trial and error basis. As you suggested try for a year, if do not work, try another. Nevertheless, if that too does not work then what to do?

In the case of Domain Name, you can't take a chance that after an year you will get the perfect one. In the world of Domain Name, every minute is important. Therefore, before registering one, I would suggest to study by yourself, also you can take help of others to see which one will be the best for your business and just go for it for more than 2-3 years.

Registering a domain for a longer duration at start up won't help your site's search engine listings. The domain age is one of the factors which benefit the search engine listings of the site and not the length of the registration period. Buying a domain for several years helps, but having the domain for several years does help. The age of a domain gives the appearance of longevity and therefore may give the site a higher relevancy score in SEs.

In terms of SEO, registering a domain for a longer period of time won't help much, as said, domain age is more important than the length of the registration period. But even thats just a small factor in the calculation of site's rankings. So I would say concentrate on link building and content more and avoid black hat techniques to get the best SEO results.

It actually depends. If you think your website is going to up for about a year or so, then why not? At least some companies would give you a discount for it. However, if you're still in a trial and error stage, then i suggest registering it for a year will do. what if you find a better domain later on? or you need a new branding? things like that.. or what if you get tired of maintaining your site so you decide to close it even before it expires? these are the things you should try to consider.

mmm...i respect all opinions and i agree with you all
but i think that Long period comes with less price advantage
and less head pain of thinking about the time to renew the domain
thnx

If you set auto renew for your domain name then management or handling wont be a problem but longer registration period for domains is a part of google's algorithm and they check age of the domain and the period for which the domain will remain online. We extended registration period of our domain by 3 years and that proved to be very helpful.

Agree with you, that's really a nice strategy.
