.ac.uk vs .edu

Do you think .ac.uk is easy to acquire than .edu ? In UK the academic institutions have the extentions ac.uk eg http://www.gla.ac.uk/

I think that's very country specific.

I think it's widely known that edu is USA and ac.uk is UK acedemia.

I don't think UK uni's would want an edu suffix.

.edu .net .gov .mil are all the TLDs of US and .com .org are worldwide but mainly are US.

.ac.uk will be considered as second level domain (SLD) as .uk is the countrywide TLD.

Might be this is the reason, if you are out of the US then it is difficult to get .edu. Right?

I have read about proposal for generic top level domains too (gTLDs).

They have compiled a list of institutions which fall outside US that they know to be eligible to request an .edu domain can apply for .edu.
