No you cannot just register a domain with any extension. Not only .us but others like .eu for European Union, .it for Italy, .ca for Canada. .au for Australia and .sg for Singapore and a lot of others do require local presence to register their ccTLDs.

I dont thinks so on the .co.uk i had 2 before noting happend to me i am 100 % sure about .us you must be a US residents like james said but .ca and all others humm never heard of like you got to be .ca for Canada only cuase i know alot of people from other places that register .ca all i know is .us is really strik with thier rule

.ca and .us need Canada and US residential address but .co.uk has no such restrictions. No other UK extensions have any such restrictions, but the .uk.com is the most costly extension compared to any other available domain TLD's.
