I think it would depend on what your site is about and your target market. If you are targetting the UK market only then .co.uk will be good, if your target market is global then .com would undoubtedly be the best choice.

I currently own a .co.uk and the .com (currently held by a domain holding company) is coming up for renewal in a couple of weeks. I'm pondering making a grab for it if they don't notice

But I wonder if it really matters. If your site is well known enough and people can find the address from search engines it shouldn't really matter what it's called. I think .com only really comes into it when people are trying to guess the site name without actually searching for it. And most of the time that's big company names and they've already bagged the sites anyway.

What you suggest about .co.uk and .eu, looks good combination, as you possibly want to expand later from UK to EU.

If you are operating your business from the U.K and you plan to expand your business to the European markets in future, then registering both .co.uk and .eu would be good.

My first preference would be .com as it is the most popular, widely used and well known TLD.

Country TLD's should be given more preference if you have market oriented business. If the whole world is your market then go for global TLD's.

I'd agree with Admin on this - I'm sure I read something recently that supported the use of local TLDs for local business and international ones for everything else. The use of .info is also growing as decent .com names get shorter in supply.

It totally doesn't matter! Whether you own a .com a .co.uk or a .yourmomma people only come to your site through search engines. If your tags are good enough then people will find you. There is a major fascination with .coms but it's a futile one. I was initially annoyed when I was caught napping and someone stole the .com of my domain name (currently on sale for nearly 3K) but now I couldn't care less! My site pulls in the traffic and is referenced on the search engines....it's a .co.uk and I'm under no illusion that it would be a better site if it was a .com!

After doing a bit of URL choosing for a new site I'm working on it seems like .co.uk is the ONLY way to go. All the 'available' .coms are bagged by domain holding companies which just show search result type pages. No doubt if you really wanted the .com you'd have to pay through the nose for it.

That is a problem.

Maybe .info is the way to go if you are looking for an international domain?
