Default excessive IMAP traffic

I have a linux/cpanel value package.

Since opening the account in 2009, our monthly bandwidth use has kept steadily around 10-12%, of which 90% is HTTP traffic.

Since the beginning of this August we've experienced very high IMAP traffic (all other traffic has remained similar to previous months). This has resulted in exceeding our bandwidth limit today.

I changed all passwords on the account (email/ftp/cpanel) in case an email account had been hacked but we still experienced the heavy IMAP traffic.

These are not heavily used email account in terms of size of emails or quantity - maybe a half dozen text emails a day in each of three accounts is typical.

The email accounts are accessed using IMAP and Thunderbird. Until a few days ago we were using Mac Mail on one machine and Windows Mail on another machine. The problem still exists...

Any ideas?

The problem in terms of hosting is that there is no way to temporarily increase bandwidth limit (temporarily since this is a problem I hope will be resolved) and even if upgraded to next package, doubling our bandwidth, it looks like it would still be hit and miss as to whether the bandwidth would last the month, based on August.

Thank you, it's overstepsbooks.com. I've already spoken to someone on live online technical support who very kindly temporarily increased my bandwidth and suggested I check our email client configuration. I have asked the two people using email clients on our domain to temporarily use webmail so I can see if the problem goes away in order to confirm if email client configuration is the problem.

I'm trying to send all the existing mail (and all the mail that will be coming) from one account to another. I already set the forwarding option to my other email, but for some reason none of the emails have been forwarded. Maybe it's going to forward the emails that will be coming.
But I also see options for 'POP download' and 'IMAP access'. Not really sure what they stand for, and what they do if I enable them. Can anybody help me clear my doubts on this? Thanks!
