Default Favicon

I contacted support last night regarding adding a favicon to My website, because I ave no idea just how or where to put it, this was from support:

(just upload the favicon.ico file in public_html or the folder in which vBulletin forum is installed.)

so I have looked this morning in cpanel and I found it even more confusing than I first thought, there are so very many folders in there, where is it to go? which folder?, how do I set a path? to it, do I have to set a path to it, does it find it's own way?, I would just like a favicon like the one that was on My old YaBB, but it went when the YaBB was removed for Me, can someone help Me with this please.

Good morning

how do I set a path? to it, do I have to set a path ....
Normally you don't have to do anything, browsers will automatically request an icon if one hasn't been explicitly defined and you probably don't want to try and define it explicitly as its browser and HTML/XTHML dependent.

Nowadays an favicon can be and ico, png, gif or jpeg but possibly not a Windows bmp.

(just upload the favicon.ico file in public_html or the folder in which vBulletin forum is installed.)
Do you know the name of the home page for you site? If you do then put the icon in the folder that has this. I can't tell you where this is an I am on a Windows server.

Bye

Ian

Thank you Ian,

You have given Me more of an idea of what to look for, I will go back into cpanel and have a more detailed look around.

Thanks again for the reply.

I think that I will re/contact support for help on this maybe I can ask them to do it for Me, as when I open public HTML there is a large list of folders and, I am not sure if I have to make a new folder or add to one of the ones already there, but once long ago I added a folder when I was with another hosting provider and this caused the virtual destruction of My entire website, and caused Me no end of headaches with them, as they expected Me to know exactly what I was doing, hence our ways parted and I had to move on, I went with freehostings but found that these were not satisfactory, I then came to WHUK, and I have found them much more user friendly.

Hey Christine,
Regarding favicon.. all you have to do is to save required image file as favicon.ico and just upload in your public_html folder. Browser will automatically detect it and will display it on address bar.
Make sure image size should be 16x16px

Thanks Harry,

I take that I would have to add a new folder named favicon.ico and put the favicon into it, is that right?.

NO.. that's incorrect.
Just save your image as favicon.ico rather then imagename.jpeg/bmp etc...
and upload this favicon.ico file directly under public_html folder No other special folder required....
Hope this will help you.

Thank you Harry,

I have just had an email from Eric, he has added it for Me, I am glad I didn't just go ahead and add a folder, Mmm I am not very good with the cpanel it scares Me, you can't afford to make a mistake or you rue the day you did it.

Thanks again for trying to help Me.

Can I ask how long the favicon will take to show, as I just looked and it's not there yet.

Good afternoon

It should appear immediately, however I find that I often have to completely clear the browsing history for it to appear.

Just to check that it is displayable you should be able to do

http://www.your domians/favicon.ico

Bye

Ian

Cool

Thank you Ian,

It was a problem with the favicon itself initially, and then as you say clearing My browser solved the problem from My end.

Thank you to everyone for all your kind help, it is very much appreciated by Me.

Hi Christine, to ensure that your favicon is shown on the forum please do this.

Log into your forum ACP and select Style Manager from the left menu
You'll now see the style/s that are installed.
Click go
You'll now see a page headed Common Templates

Second pane down is called headinclude

In the pane you'll see....

Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=$stylevar[charset]" />
<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin $vboptions[templateversion]" />
After the second line ADD
Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />
The first three lines should now be
Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=$stylevar[charset]" />
<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin $vboptions[templateversion]" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" />
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click save.

This ensures that all vBulletin pages have the correct code to display the favicon
The favicon can also be uploaded to your forum root folder.

Smile

Thanks for that info malvps,

I am gathering lots of useful information on things you can do with the vBulletin, and as a novice at this it is extremely helpful to Me, especially when I can see the details as you have done for Me, that way I can see that I have done it correctly, thank you again.
