Apologies for the delay in replying, I have been away for a few days.
I have tried turning on the 'Use Apache mod_rewrite' and 'Add suffix to URLs' options in Joomla again, but whatever I do gives me 404 errors when I click on any of the menu items on the site preview.
As I explained in my original posting, I can't transfer the DNS over yet as the existing site is still active and I would like to know that the SEF URLs are working before I do so anyway.
I admit that I am very new to the Joomla system, so I apologise if I am being an idiot.
I have been following the instructions on

I get to Step 5 under the Apache heading, which suggests that the problem could be

Are you able to confirm if mod rewrite is enabled or not. Certainly the test that they mention in the linked page would suggest it isn't.
