Default Using Wordpress withouth Su-PHP?

I've having trouble doing automatic upgrades of Wordpress and installs of Plugins. Apparently this is because I haven't got suPHP on my server. suPHP enables Wordpress to do installs whilst keeping the files secure from hackers. So WHUK are suggesting I move all my domains to a shared server that has got suPHP.

Can anyone suggest any alternatives that won't be such a hassle or cause disruption to my seven websites and various mail accounts?

I'm a bit of a noob, especially with Wordpress so please feel free to spell it out for me. I won't feel patronised, just grateful!
Thanks
Colin

Ps. Better still would you guys at webhosting.uk.com be willing to install a suPHP module to the 'Kent' server? I thought all your servers were meant to be Wordpress 'friendly' but being unable to install plugins or upgrade Wordpress is far from friendly.

Hi Colin,

If you wish to upgrade the Wordpress or if you want to add new Wordpress plugins then you will need to change the permissions of respective directories to 777, you can change the permissions through FTP or cPanel -> File Manager. Once you are done with the upgrade and the Plugins after that reset the permissions back to 755.

Thanks for the response James
Which directory would I need to change permissions? And when you say 'directory', do you just mean the folder or all the files inside?

I have replied to your ticket, please check it. You need to temporary change the nobody.nobody ownership of all the file/folders and after update revert the ownership for security.

Default What to do if you use Wordpress on a server without suPHP

Thanks James
That sounds a bit scary, in terms of security. It's too easy for some numbskull (ie me!) to forget to reset them, then I get hacked. And presumably you just meant the Wordpress directory (WP-content?), not my root directory! Having thought about it I'm moving to a new server, though still with webhostinguk.com. You guys rock.
Regards
Colin
