There are only small differences. VPS hosting while it can be served via a cluster is commonly found on a single "beefed up" server. While cloud computing is generally found run on a cluster of servers that allow for redundancy and fail over. Additionally, you will commonly find that cloud computing is using ISCSI or other form of Network Storage for its storage space, while most of the VPS hosts I see are using local storage.

Cloud computing basically gives you access to shared computing resources. Cloud computing is based on three main characteristics - It is sold on demand, it is elastic – the user can get as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time and it is fully managed by the provider.

Re:Cloud computing vs VPS
Hello...
The general cloud concept is of a system that is highly scalable and not dependent on one physical server, so it's redundant from hardware failure. A VPS will be a virtualised 'slice' of a physical server.

When it comes to the selection of VPS hosting and cloud hosting, it is crucial to choose the server that best meets your requirements. A virtual private server is nothing but a virtual machine which is formed by partitioning a physical dedicated server using a virtualization software, so that every virtual machine acts as a stand alone virtual dedicated server. Every virtual private servers has their own disk space, bandwith, file system and run their own operating system (OS).
Whereas, a cloud hosting server is a virtual machine that is dynamically scalable by virtualization. Basically, a cloud concept consists of redundant hardware already installed and tested by the provider. Both virtual private servers and cloud hosting servers offers different features, function as well as supported applications.

It is highly important to understand the fundamental differences between both VPS & Cloud. Once should know what each server has to offer and whether it meets to your requirements or not. The most important thing about VPS is that it doesn't have any centralized storage, which means if your server is down, probably you could be down for many hours. Secondly, you cannot scale on your VPS as you are absolutely limited based on the amount of server resources that is on the server your data resides on.
A cloud server has a centralized storage, which means even if your server goes down your website will still be able to deliver data to your website visitors. On cloud server, you can easily scale server resources according to your requirements.

Just think that, Cost of a VPS is as similar as a cloud server. If you are getting increased reliability, high-performance, high availability, and greater scalability in the same price, why would you get a VPS? Anytime, cloud will remain the best among other web hosting solutions.

Although VPS is a great hosting solution, there are better alternatives out there for giant websites that receive massive traffic.

Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. Cloud model promotes availability and is composed of five essential characteristics, viz., on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured Service. Cloud computing is not a form of virtual private server (VPS) hosting. Cloud computing is an extremely effective and efficient computing process. Cloud computing allows you to set up or upgrade a server very quickly and automatically. With cloud computing technology, you can add, delete, upgrade (when you need more computing power), or downgrade servers on-demand, and you pay only for what you use. Cloud computing is becoming an industry favorite, as its dynamic solutions offer users the convenience of on-demand, fully scalable computing and data storage services at lower costs.
Cloud computing offers numerous other benefits including enhanced security, is financially more appealing to small and mid-size companies, and offers pay-as-you-grow mode of doing business. Cloud provides most robust backup facility, and hence, there is no fear of loss of data. Cloud computing is much more advanced than VPS hosting and uses robust infrastructure. It uses a fault-tolerant system, and as data is stored on multiple servers at multiple locations, no problem arises due to a server’s failure.
